[SMM News] Vale: Q2 nickel production decreased by 17.9 per cent and sales increased by 14.3 per cent

SMM7 24: recently, Vale released its second quarter results. Nickel production reached 45,000 metric tons in the second quarter, down 17.9 percent from the first quarter and 32.0 percent from the second quarter of fiscal 2018. Nickel sales were 57.5 kilotons in the second quarter of 2009, up 14.3 percent from the first quarter. Due to the low production in the current quarter, which also reflects the shutdown of On ç a Puma, Vale's revised nickel production guidance in 2019 is 210000 to 220 000 tons.

In the second quarter of fiscal year 2019, the production of finished nickel was affected by regular and non-periodic maintenance activities at the North Atlantic Refinery. Production has been resumed with these refineries and is operating at normal prices. Despite the above effects, upstream (mine-smelting) activity in the North Atlantic has not been affected, which operates as planned during the current quarter and its raw materials will be refined on a regular basis in the next quarter.

Sudbury raw material production reached 9600 metric tons in the second quarter of 2019, down 23.8 per cent from the first quarter and 27.8 per cent from the second quarter of last year. As a result of the unplanned maintenance activities of Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery, the plant was unable to produce in June, and the Clydach refinery in Wales carried out maintenance activities, limiting smelter production to about 50 per cent for more than two months. Sudbury production is low.

Thompson raw material production reached 2600 metric tons in the second quarter of 2019, down 16.1 per cent from the first quarter and 55.2 per cent from the second quarter of last year. The decline was mainly due to the planned and unplanned maintenance of Thompson as it moved to mining plants in 2018 and its feed was being processed at Copper Cliff and Clydach nickel refineries.

Production at the Voisey's Bay mine reached 8500 metric tons in the second quarter of 2019, down 16.7 per cent from the first quarter and 10.5 per cent from the second quarter of last year. Production was reduced as a result of regular and non-periodic maintenance at the Changgang (Long Harbour) smelter in June.

Indonesia Business (PTVI)

Nickel production reached 13200 metric tons in the second quarter of 2019, down 15.9 per cent from the first quarter and 25.8 per cent from the second quarter last year. Production decreased as a result of regular maintenance activities at the Matsusaka and Clydach refineries.

New Caledonian Operations (VNC)

It reached 5900 metric tons in the second quarter of 2019, down 6.3 per cent from the first quarter and 37.2 per cent from the second quarter. As reported by 1Q19, the decline in production is due to limited production at the VNC site, as active maintenance approaches are being taken to improve the performance of assets. As more work has been carried out than originally planned, the time required to complete this initiative has been extended.

Brazil (On ç a Puma)

Production reached 3900 tons in the second quarter of 2019, down 9.3 per cent from the first quarter and 30.4 per cent from the second quarter last year. The decrease was mainly due to a reduction in the grade of raw materials. Mining activities were suspended in September 2017 and the plant has since processed only stored ore. Since June 2019, Vale has suspended its nickel processing activities at the On ç aPuma plant as a result of the Brazilian court's request for a suspension of ore processing activities. Vale continues to challenge and appeal the suspension decision with the support of seven reports of designated experts.

High-Grade NPI Smelter Profits Squeezed as Ore Prices Rise and Sales Prices Dip
[SMM Nickel Flash] Based on nickel ore prices from 25 days ago, smelter profits for high-grade NPI remained high this week. However, from the current raw material side, ore prices from both the Philippines and Indonesia increased, while auxiliary material prices saw a slight pullback, leading to an increase in the cash cost of producing high-grade NPI from spot ore. At the same time, high-grade NPI prices experienced some pullback, making it difficult for smelter profits to see sustained improvement.

High-Grade NPI Prices Fall, Expected to Stabilize as Chinese New Year Approaches
[SMM Nickel Flash] This week, due to a sharp decline in futures triggering arbitrage selling, high-grade NPI prices fell significantly. However, after the selling activity subsided, upstream quotations and the market center gradually returned to normal levels, supported by cost factors. Looking ahead, as the Chinese New Year holiday approaches, market activity is expected to remain subdued, and high-grade NPI prices are projected to hover at highs with limited fluctuations.
